Types of Annuitization Options

Annuitization is the process of converting the accumulated value of an annuity into a stream of regular income payments, typically for a set period or for life. It allows annuity owners to turn their savings into guaranteed income, often used during retirement.
-
Life Only (Single Life Annuity)
Provides income for the lifetime of the annuitant. Payments stop upon death, regardless of how long the annuitant lived. Offers the highest monthly payment, but no beneficiary benefit.
-
Life with Period Certain
Pays income for life, but guarantees payments for a specific period (e.g., 10, 15, or 20 years). If the annuitant passes away before the end of the period, remaining payments go to a designated beneficiary.
-
Joint and Survivor Annuity
Pays income for the lifetime of two individuals (typically spouses). After the first person dies, payments continue for the lifetime of the survivor. Payout amounts can be full or reduced for the survivor.
-
Life with Refund (Cash Refund or Installment Refund)
Ensures that if the annuitant dies before receiving the full value of their original premium, the remaining balance is refunded to a beneficiary—either in a lump sum (cash refund) or continued installments.
-
Fixed Period (Period Certain Only)
Pays income for a specified period (e.g., 10 or 20 years), regardless of whether the annuitant is alive. Beneficiaries receive any remaining payments if the annuitant passes away during the term.
-
Lump Sum Payment
Rather than receiving regular payments, the annuity owner may choose to receive the entire accumulated value as a single payout.

Types of Annuity
Fixed Annuity
Earns a guaranteed interest rate, typically 3%–5%. Provides stable, predictable growth with no market risk.
Fixed Indexed Annuity (FIA)
Earnings are tied to a market index (e.g., S&P 500) with 0%–8% potential returns. Offers principal protection and growth potential, with caps or participation limits.
Variable Annuity
Returns fluctuate based on market investments, ranging from losses to double-digit gains. Offers higher growth potential but carries market risk.
